Arabic sciences and philosophy: A historical journal

Presentation

Until 2025, Arabic sciences and philosophy: A historical journal is published by Cambridge University Press with the support of the CNRS, and has been published since 1991. Liverpool University Press (LUP) will continue to publish the journal from 2026 onwards. Since its inception, it has been guided by an international advisory editorial board, consolidating the standards of rigor that are emerging in our disciplines, allowing young researchers to make their work known, and opening the field to related disciplines. The issues published testify to the fidelity to these objectives.

Each article is submitted, anonymously, to two readers chosen within the advisory editorial board or outside when the theme of the article requires it. If there is a disagreement between the two experts, a third opinion is requested. The editorial board attaches the greatest importance to the material presentation of the articles: the authors, their institution and their address are indicated at the beginning of each article. These indications are followed by abstracts in English and French. The instructions to authors, summarized on the back cover, ensure uniformity of presentation of the articles.

Another point that must be stressed is the balance between articles written in French and articles written in English. Arabic sciences and philosophy has been critically acclaimed since its first issues, as shown by reviews in Nature (vol. 353, 3 October 1991) and British book news (February 1992).

Currently, the International Society for the History of Arabic and Islamic Science and Philosophy (SIHSPAI) and the Centre d'Histoire des Sciences et des Philosophies Arabes et Médiévales (CHSPAM, Paris, SPHERE laboratory, CNRS UMR 7219) are strongly represented in the journal's bodies. Membership in the SIHSPAI includes a subscription to the journal.

The journal is based on the collaboration between the CAPHÉS (Paris, CNRS UAR 3610), the CHSPAM and the Centre Léon Robin (Paris, CNRS UMR 8061); its editorial secretariat, located at the CAPHÉS, is provided by Erwan Penchèvre. The edition is double and simultaneous, paper and electronic. Tables of contents and abstracts in English and French of all articles published since 1991 are available online in open access from LUP (www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/journal/asp). The business model followed by LUP is a “hybrid” one. Authors can choose to pay article processing charges (APC) to make their article available online in open access as soon as it is published; otherwise, the article is not in open access, but the author can nevertheless deposit the accepted version of the article in an open archive (HAL, arXiv,...), even before its paper publication.
